The 92nd Academy Awards- The Oscars- Best Adapted Screenplay https://dtn.myuat.com/the-92nd-academy-awards-the-oscars-best-adapted-screenplay/ https://dtn.myuat.com/the-92nd-academy-awards-the-oscars-best-adapted-screenplay/#respond Fri, 07 Feb 2020 15:43:59 +0000 https://donttellnetflix.com/?p=13266 Screenplays are what make a movie what it is, and without one, you simply cannot create a movie. At the very least, it would be completely incomprehensible. They give plot, direction, and purpose to a film and are always necessary to a film. There are, however, many different kinds of screenplays that exist out in the cinema world. For instance, there are screenplays that are wholly original and are created by the director or other writers of a film to give it a unique plot. On the other hand, there are what are known as adapted screenplays which are stories told though some other medium which find their way onto the big screen.

First on the list of nominees for this category is a film that is receiving yet another nomination is ‘The Irishman.’ The person who specifically worked on the screenplay which is being nominated is Steven Zaillian. ‘The Irishman’ tells the story of aging World War II vet Frank Sheeran as he reflects on his life as a hustler and mob hitman, working alongside many notorious figures, including Jimmy Hoffa, the subject of one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in American history.

The Irishman

The next film to grace the list of nominees for Best Adapted Screenplay is Jojo Rabbit. Yet another film that has been nominated for a number of Academy Awards, Jojo Rabbit’s screenplay was written by director Taika Waititi himself. The movie shows us a lonely German boy’s world turned upside down during WWII when he discovers his single mother is hiding a young Jewish girl in their attic. Aided only by his idiotic imaginary friend Adolf Hitler, Jojo must confront his blind nationalism.

Jojo Rabbit

Then, we have an adaptation that gives us a look at what is considered to be one of the more enigmatic characters in a comic book universe. At least background wise he is enigmatic, but the adaptation of ‘Joker’ is based off of the background few knew existed in the first place. In Gotham’s fractured society, a young man longs to be a stand-up comic, but finds the joke is always on him. Caught in a cycle of apathy, cruelty and ultimately, betrayal, the comedian makes one bad decision after another, bringing about a chain reaction of escalating events.

Joker

Following that, we have the movie ‘Little Women’ which is the seventh film adaptation of the 1868 novel of the same name. Obviously the original novel was a very well told story, because this screenplay adaptation by director Greta Gerwig was nominated for multiple awards as well. ‘Little Women’ tells the story of burgeoning author Jo March who looks back on her and her three sisters’ Massachusetts childhoods and the events and relationships that helped shape them as adults.

Little Women

The last nomination on the list is ‘The Two Popes,’ and more specifically Anthony McCarten for writing the adapted screenplay to begin with. To further give credit where it is due, the movie is adapted from McCarten’s 2017 play, The Pope. The plot of the movie revolves around the introspective Pope Benedict and his harshest critic, Cardinal Bergoglio, engage in a deep, revelatory discussion about the state of the Catholic Church and their future as its leaders in 2012.

The Two Popes

We have already covered numerous other award categories already such as Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Animated Feature Film, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Directing Nominees, Best Documentary Feature, Best Documentary Short, Best Film Editing, Best International Feature, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Music (Original Score), Best Original Screenplay, and Best Visual Effects.

The 92nd Academy Awards- The Oscars- Best Visual Effects https://dtn.myuat.com/the-92nd-academy-awards-the-oscars-best-visual-effects/ https://dtn.myuat.com/the-92nd-academy-awards-the-oscars-best-visual-effects/#respond Thu, 06 Feb 2020 17:41:24 +0000 https://donttellnetflix.com/?p=13259 Visuals are, obviously, what we pay attention to when we watch movies. This category is more about the technological advancements that a group has managed to achieve in order to make a movie into a visual masterpiece. So we will be going over the nominations for the Best Visuals categories.

First on the list of nominations for this category is ‘Avengers: Endgame’ and more specifically the designers of which were Dan DeLeeuw, Russell Earl, Matt Aitken and Dan Sudick. ‘Endgame’ is extremely reliant on visual effects and did an unbelievable job at immersing its audience into a world to feels almost real. Marvel films have always tried to push visuals to their extremes, and ‘Endgame’ carries on that tradition by creating some of, possibly, the best visuals seen yet.

Avengers: Endgame

Next up, we have a movie that has a numerous amount of other nominations, and that is ‘The Irishman.’ The visual effect designers for which were Pablo Helman, Leandro Estebecorena, Nelson Sepulveda-Fauser and Stephane Grabli. It should be no surprise that this movie ended up in this category either as many visual aspects have been nominated for this movie already so the nomination for Best Visual Effect makes sense.

The Irishman

Following that, we have ‘The Lion King’ as the next nomination. As a live action version of an animated film, Robert Legato, Adam Valdez, Andrew R. Jones and Elliot Newman, the visual effects designers, did an excellent job of making the characters seem real. It isn’t easy making animated anthropomorphic animals seem like they are living and speaking in real life. As such, they earned their place on the list of nominees to receive this award.

The Lion King

Another film to have multiple awards attached to it nomination wise is ‘1917.’ It managed to also make its way into the category for Best Visual Effects because of the hard work of Guillaume Rocheron, Greg Butler and Dominic Tuohy. War films, often times, must be visceral to some degree in order to illicit some kind of emotional response from the audience. This movie did well enough in that respect to make an impact that put it on this list.

1917

Finally, we have Roger Guyett, Neal Scanlan, Patrick Tubach and Dominic Tuohy for their work on ‘Star Wars: Episode IX- The Rise of Skywalker.’ As this movie is supposed to be the last in the mainline series of films, it should be no surprise that a lot of extra work went into the movie to make it incredibly visually appealing. A fantastic space opera should have fantastic visuals, and that is what was accomplished for this film. No matter what you may have thought about the film, there is no question that the visuals were incredible.

Star Wars: Episode IX- The Rise of Skywalker

There are countless categories for the Oscars. There are so many in fact that we may not end up covering all of the categories and their nominations. We have managed to cover a fair number of them already, however, such as Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Animated Feature Film, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Directing Nominees, Best Documentary Feature, Best Documentary Short, Best Film Editing, Best International Feature, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Music (Original Score), and Best Original Screenplay.

The Oscars Voting Process https://dtn.myuat.com/the-oscars-voting-process/ https://dtn.myuat.com/the-oscars-voting-process/#respond Thu, 06 Feb 2020 15:13:41 +0000 https://donttellnetflix.com/?p=13256 The 92nd Academy Awards are fast approaching, in fact at the time of this being written they will be taking taking place in just a few days. There are plenty of people out there that don’t understand exactly how the voting process works. First of all, the biggest thing that people should know is that it is called The Academy Awards for a reason. The Academy is the group that votes on movies, directors, musicians, etc. This doesn’t mean, however, that one group of people determines all of the winners.

Winners of the awards are decided upon by their peers in the same fields. For example, Best Directing is decided by directors and film editors are nominated by film editors, etc. However, the award for Best Picture is voted on by all members of The Academy. Other certain categories such as International Feature Film and Animated Feature Film have special voting rules. Voting for these films is done when the Academy president chooses a head for the voting committee and that head sends invitations to other members of the Academy to vote for the best films.

Nominations voting is conducted using both paper and online ballots, with online voting being the preferred choice for the overwhelming majority of Academy members. Voting begins for all Academy members at the end of December and all votes are tallied by PricewaterhouseCoopers. For the final balloting process, all voting is conducted online, and all categories become available on the ballot for voting members. In the end, only two members of PricewaterhouseCoopers know the results of the ballots until the envelopes are opened on stage. The results of which we will get to see on Sunday Febraury 9 @ 8pm EST.

A movie simply would not exist if it didn’t have a screenplay. Screenplays are the movies before the movies actually start being filmed. We will now be going through the nominees for the Best Original Screenplay, and the movies that they did the screenplays for.

First up on the list of nominees, we have Rian Johnson for his work on the movie ‘Knives Out.’ Johnson is known for his work on the movies Brick, Looper, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and now, Knives Out. This movie sees a popular mystery writer turning up dead in his mansion, forcing renowned private detective Benoit Blanc to investigate, thus revealing that every member of the eccentric author’s family, as well as his nurse, is a murder suspect.

Knives Out

Next on the list of nominees for Best Original Screenplay is Noah Baumbach for his work on the movie ‘Marriage Story.’ Baumbach wrote for movies such as The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and Madagascar 3. ‘Marriage Story’ sees a young creative couple and their son navigate the tricky waters of bicoastal separation and impending divorce.

Marriage Story

Coming in next on the list is Sam Mendes and Krysty Wilson-Cairns for their work on the movie ‘1917.’ Mendes worked as director, not only on this movie, but also on films such as Skyfall and Spectre. This, meanwhile, is Wilson-Cairns first feature film she has written for. ‘1917’ sees two British soldiers during WWI sent on a dangerous mission to stop an attack by the British 7th Division that will result in a massacre by the Germans. Their assignment takes on extra urgency as one of the young soldiers’ brothers is fighting in that Division.

1917

Following that nomination, we have Quentin Tarantino who is up for a couple of different nominations for his film ‘Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood.’ Tarantino has a number of original screenplays under his belt already such as Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, and Inglorious Basterds. It isn’t much of a surprise that he is on this list of nominees either. ‘Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood’ sees Los Angeles in 1969, with aging TV star Rick Dalton and his longtime stunt double Cliff Booth struggling to make their way around an industry and a city they hardly recognize anymore.

Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood

Finally, the last nominees for Best Original Screenplay are Bong Joon-Ho and Han Jin-Won for their work on ‘Parasite.’ This movie ended up being a surprise hit in the United States, so much so that it had been nominated for a number of different awards already. ‘Parasite’ sees greed, class discrimination and a mysterious interloper threatening the newly formed symbiotic relationship between the wealthy Park family and the destitute Kim clan.

Parasite

The Oscars are fast approaching, and with numerous awards to be given in a variety of categories, we have already covered some of those categories. The nominees we have covered already were for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Animated Feature Film, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Directing Nominees, Best Documentary Feature, Best Documentary Short, Best Film Editing, Best International Feature, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and Best Music (Original Score).

The Winners of Sundance 2020 https://dtn.myuat.com/the-winners-of-sundance-2020/ https://dtn.myuat.com/the-winners-of-sundance-2020/#respond Mon, 03 Feb 2020 17:07:21 +0000 https://donttellnetflix.com/?p=12827 Sundance Film Festival is a famous yearly cinema festival that sees countless independent films being showcased to cinema lovers. The festival committee announces winners based off of how well done the movies are just like any other event. Lee Isaac Chung’s ‘Minari’ was so beloved by the audience at Sundance 2020 that it ended up receiving the top U.S. Dramatic grand jury prize. ‘Minari’ is based on Chung’s own childhood on a rural Arkansas farm, following a Korean American family as they struggle to establish roots in a new home. ‘Minari’ did not just win the jury grand prize, but also the audience award, something achieved by a total of eight films since 1989. Among those films are Oscar nominees ‘Whiplash’ and ‘Precious.’

The next winner on the list is the winner of the top U.S. Documentary prize ‘Boys State.’ This film tells the chronicle of a weeklong boys’ leadership camp in Texas from directors Jesse Moss and Amanda McBaine. ‘Boys State’ managed to ink a record-breaking $12 million documentary deal. The audience award for U.S. documentary went to ‘Crip Camp,’ directed by Nicole Newnham and Jim Lebrecht.

All four of the jury directing prizes went to female filmmakers: Garrett Bradley’s “Time” in U.S. Documentary, Radha Blank’s ‘The 40-Year-Old Version’ in U.S. Dramatic, Iryna Tsilyk’s ‘The Earth is Blue as an Orange’ from Ukraine/Lithuania in World Documentary and Maïmouna Doucouré’s ‘Cuties’ from France in World Dramatic. Blank won the award for U.S. Dramatic directing for a semiautobiographical New York-set story she wrote, directed and stars in about a frustrated playwright who finds a new outlet in hip-hop.

The winner of the NEXT section of the film festival received both the audience award and the jury award. This film is ‘I Carry You With Me,’ a Spanish language love story, and the first fiction feature filmed by documentary filmmaker Heidi Ewing. There are the obvious awards that people pay attention to and then there are numerous categories that go through the rest of what makes a movie great. Something we don’t really think about when we watch movies is all of the smaller details and most of the time, the music,or score, of the film. Sometimes films use music from various artists in the background to amplify a scene and other times they use music written specifically for them. Original music written for movies is the category we will be going over nominees for now.

First up on the list of nominees we have Hildur Guðnadóttir for her work on the movie Joker. It should be no surprise that she is on the list because Joker has been nominated for so many other categories. That is to say, there is a lot going for that movie and the score being incredible enough to be nominated is no surprise.

Joker

The next nomination for Best Music is for Alexandre Desplat for his work on the film Little Women. He has won two Academy Awards, for his musical scores to the films The Grand Budapest Hotel and The Shape of Water. Little Women is up for a few different Academy Awards, so adding Best Music to that list shouldn’t be much of a surprise.

Little Women

Following that, we have Randy Newman for his composition of music for the movie Marriage Story. Newman is known for his distinctive voice and his work on numerous Disney-Pixar animated films. Marriage Story is yet another film to have numerous nominations, and Best Original Score just seems to make sense.

Marriage Story

The next nominee for Best Music is the movie 1917 and more specifically, composer Thomas Newman. Cousin of singer- songwriter Randy Newman, Thomas Newman worked with Sondheim on Broadway plays. He has done other award winning films before, including The Shawshank Redemption, and the 1994 Little Women.

1917

The final nominee for Best Music is John Williams for his work on Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Star Wars is known for having epic and incredible music. This time around is no different and the music would have to be great since this is supposed to be the last mainline film. Of course the list would be rounded out like this since the franchise is known for its score.

Star Wars: Episode IX- The Rise of Skywalker

If you want to know some other nominees for different categories, we have also gone over Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Animated Feature Film, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Directing Nominees, Best Documentary Feature, Best Documentary Short, Best Film Editing, Best International Feature, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

Portrayal of a character in the film is very important to the way the film plays out, as well as how the characters look in each scene they are in. Best Makeup and Hairstyling goes to the people that did such a great job that the movies’ characters seemed much more real to the audience. We will now go through the nominees for that award.

Up first on the list of nominees is the movie Bombshell, and more specifically the artists Kazu Hiro, Anne Morgan and Vivian Baker. Bombshell tells the story of three women taking on the controversial media empire Fox News and face off against the powerful man who created it. Given the plot of the film and the fact that the women in the movie are supposed be people who work in a newsroom, the makeup and hairstyling matches perfectly with the environment that they are supposed to be in.

Bombshell Hair and Makeup

It should be no surprise that the next nominees on the list are Nicki Ledermann and Kay Georgiou for their work on the movie Joker. In Gotham’s fractured society, a young man longs to be a stand-up comic, but finds the joke is always on him. Caught in a cycle of apathy, cruelty and ultimately, betrayal, the comedian makes one bad decision after another, bringing about a chain reaction of escalating events. In order to show the descent into madness, of course the makeup and hairstyling would have to be perfect.

Joker Hair and Makeup

Following that nomination, we have the nomination for the movie Judy, and more specifically Jeremy Woodhead. Thirty years after she shot to stardom, showbiz legend Judy Garland arrives in London to perform a five-week sold-out run of shows. As she prepares her act, fights with management, charms musicians and reminisces with friends and fans, her wit and warmth shine through. The makeup and hairstyling was perfectly done and allowed Judy Garland to be emulated wonderfully.

Judy Hair and Makeup

Following that, we have Paul Gooch, Arjen Tuiten and David White for their work on Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. The movie sees Maleficent and goddaughter Aurora beginning to question the complex family ties that bind them as they are pulled in different directions by impending nuptials, unexpected allies and dark new forces. The work of the artists is very obviously noticeable since many characters are meant to be either fantasy creatures or very regal characters.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil Hair and Makeup

Finally we have the movie 1917, for its artists Naomi Donne, Tristan Versluis and Rebecca Cole. 1917 sees, during World War I, two British soldiers sent on a dangerous mission to stop an attack by the British 7th Division that will result in a massacre by the Germans. Their assignment takes on extra urgency as one of the young soldiers’ brothers is fighting in that Division. As a period film, the makeup and hairstyling must match the period represented and it does that very well.

1917 Hair and Makeup

If you want to know nominations for other categories, then we’ve already done the nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Animated Feature, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Director, Best Documentary Feature, Best Documentary Short, Best Film Editing, and Best International Feature.

Now we will be taking a look at films that were released internationally. These movies were the ones chosen as the best movies outside of the country.

First up on the list of international nominees is a movie called Corpus Christi. After leaving the violent Youth Detention Center, 20-year-old Daniel decides to pose as a parish priest, despite his lack of religious education. His spirit and passion inspire his small-town congregants, who have been unable to heal after the tragic accidental death of seven of their youth. Originally a Polish film, it was rated highly after releasing in the United States.

Corpus Christi

Second on the list of nominees, we have the documentary feature Honeyland. Honeyland sees a woman, Hatidze, living with her ailing mother in the mountains of Macedonia, making a living cultivating honey using ancient beekeeping traditions. When an unruly family moves in next door, what at first seems like a balm for her solitude becomes a source of tension as they, too, want to practice beekeeping. Originally releasing in North Macedonia, it has become popular enough to not only be nominated for this category, but also the Best Documentary Feature.

Honeyland

Next up on the list, we have a movie from France called Les Misérables, but not the same one that was released in 2012. This film sees a man, Stéphane, joining the Anti-Crime Brigade in Montfermeil, the town where Victor Hugo set his novel “Les Miserables.” He quickly discovers tensions running high between neighborhood gangs. When his team finds itself overrun during the course of an arrest, a drone captures their every action.

After that, we have a movie from Spain that is actually in the category for Best Actor in a Leading Role because of actor Antonio Banderas. The final nomination on the list for Best International Feature is another film that is on other nomination lists, and that is Parasite. Coming from South Korea, it is a film that, for many, came from nowhere and ended up as one of the Best Pictures of the year overall. Parasite sees greed, class discrimination and a mysterious interloper threatening the newly formed symbiotic relationship between the wealthy Park family and the destitute Kim clan.

The 92nd Academy Awards- The Oscars- Best Film Editing https://dtn.myuat.com/the-92nd-academy-awards-the-oscars-best-film-editing/ https://dtn.myuat.com/the-92nd-academy-awards-the-oscars-best-film-editing/#respond Thu, 23 Jan 2020 15:25:27 +0000 https://donttellnetflix.com/?p=11854 There are numerous categories involved with the Academy Awards, and while there are the bigger categories such as best picture, best actor, best actress, etc., there are other categories that are important to the film making process. One such category is film editing, without which a film would not at all look coherent. So we will now be going through the list of nominees for the film editing category.

First up on the list of nominees for Best Film Editing is Ford v. Ferrari, and more specifically Michael McCusker and Andrew Buckland. Ford v. Ferrari sees visionary auto designer Carroll Shelby and race car driver Ken Miles teaming up to build a high-performance race car for the Ford Motor Company, hoping to defy the odds and defeat the dominant Ferrari at the 1966 Le Mans. Without proper film editing, we wouldn’t experience moments in the film the way we were intended to and the nature of the film would be lost.

Next on the list, we have The Irishman which has been nominated for a good amount of awards other than just this one. The head of the editing being Thelma Schoonmaker who was responsible for it being on the list. The Irishman sees World War II vet Frank Sheeran reflecting on his life as a hustler and mob hitman, working alongside many notorious figures, including Jimmy Hoffa, the subject of one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in American history.

Following that we have Jojo Rabbit, and more specifically we have Tom Eagles to thank for it. Jojo Rabbit shows us, during WWII, a lonely German boy’s world turned upside down when he discovers his single mother is hiding a young Jewish girl in their attic. Aided only by his idiotic imaginary friend Adolf Hitler, Jojo must confront his blind nationalism. Without the editing on this one a lot of the comedy in the film could have been lost and it wouldn’t look right.

Jojo Rabbit

Then, we have Jeff Groth for his film editing work on the movie Joker. Joker is done so well that it, like The Irishman, is nominated for a large number of awards. In Gotham’s fractured society, a young man longs to be a stand-up comic, but finds the joke is always on him. Caught in a cycle of apathy, cruelty and ultimately, betrayal, the comedian makes one bad decision after another, bringing about a chain reaction of escalating events.

Finally, we have Yang Jinmo, for his work with the editing on the movie Parasite. Greed, class discrimination and a mysterious interloper threaten the newly formed symbiotic relationship between the wealthy Park family and the destitute Kim clan. Parasite was a surprise hit and the editing of the film definitely contributed to how well it did.

We have also covered the nominees for categories such as Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Animated Feature, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Director, Best Documentary Feature, and Best Documentary Short.
